Over my career, I have had the opportunity to write editorials for a college paper, cover seed spitting contests and murders for a small daily; design pages for events mundane and world changing; and most recently, had the opportunity to lead a staff.
For 90 years, The Virgin Islands Daily News has sought to celebrate its community and hold officials responsible for good government. During that span the paper has been honored with numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. I worked on this project with Librarian Dagmar Greenaway and Editor Emeritus J. Lowe Davis.
In 2017, The Virgin Islands Government Employees' Retirement System was less than six years away from insolvency, but the territory's leaders seemed disinterested in actually finding the cause of the crisis, or a solution to the problem. The Daily News produced this report in an attempt to find a solution. The system remains adrift today.
Not every day results in a paper that marks a pivotal moment in a community's history. But, as a managing editor, it is my job to make sure the paper we produce is the best that it can be.
These two papers produced under my direction are simply that, a snapshot of what The Daily News produces each and every day.
As the governor rushed to pass a bill to use millions of tax dollars on a sports tourism scheme, The Daily News raced him to the finish line with this report. While I primarily served as the lead designer and copy editor, it was my first major opportunity to learn how to run an investigative project from Pulitzer Prize-winner J. Lowe Davis.
